I am obsessed with space. Which part of it belongs to the humans? Which part of it belongs to the rest of the natural world? Does physical size determine importance, or is it personal power? I research these elements through small scale mixed media drawings. I draw hydras, jellyfish, and microscopic organisms because they defy space conventions. Through the drawing process, I force them to choose between positive and negative space, restraints these creatures are free to abandon in nature. I do this in order to display their innate yet secret strength. I also strive to portray humans’ desire to control their environment, even those parts that seem uncontrollable. I call this world “Espace-Nether,” or nether space.
